Fire_Family_LR.jpgAccording to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):
In 2014, there were 1,298,000 fires reported in the United States. These fires caused 3,275 civilian deaths, 15,775 civilian injuries, and $11.6 billion in property damage. The NFPA offers these additional staggering statistics:

  • 494,000 were structure fires, causing 2,860 civilian deaths, 13,425 civilian injuries, and $9.8 billion in property damage.
  • The 2014 U.S. a fire department responded to a fire every 24 seconds, and one structure fire was reported every 64 seconds.
  • One home structure fire was reported every 86 seconds.
  • One civilian fire injury was reported every 33 minutes.
  • One civilian fire death occurred every 2 hours and 41 minutes.

Unfortunately, fire can strike a home or business at almost any time. And, when it does, it can be devastating. Even if no injuries or deaths occur, the loss of one's property and home/business will have a major impact on your life. On top of that, having to deal with the insurance company and advocate for a full and fair settlement can be exhausting.

Here are two instances where Professional Loss Adjusters, a team of public adjusters who work on your behalf—not the insurance company—was called in to help settle a fire insurance claim, and in the end, secured a larger settlement than the home/condo owners could have received on their own:

Riviera_3Decker_Before.jpgThis three-family home in Worcester, Massachusetts, was badly damaged by fire. Although this type of property is common for the area, the Worcester Historical Commission has designated properties such as this an “historical property.” This designation required that the exterior of the building remain accurate after renovations were completed.

In this particular loss, the original exterior of the building featured columns and ornamental cornice trim. The siding was comprised of cedar shakes. These historical features are expensive and difficult to replicate.

Riviera_3Decker_After.jpgThe higher reconstruction costs were reflected in this building claim, which ultimately settled for more than $500,000. This enabled the general contractor to replicate the exterior in a manner that was acceptable to the Historical Commission.

As a side note, modern materials were used in the repairs, which included fiberglass columns, synthetic slates on the roof and vinyl siding that looks like cedar shakes. Not only do these products look authentic, they are far more durable and require less maintenance than the original materials.

Cambridge_Condo_Before_LR.jpgA four-story condominium building suffered a major fire. The fourth floor had to be completely demolished and rebuilt. In addition, there was substantial water damage to the rest of the building.

The insurance company’s adjuster misstated an important provision of the insurance policy, which would have significantly limited the settlement for the building loss.

Professional Loss Adjusters worked to successfully achieve a more favorable settlement for our client. The net result to the condo association was an increase of $180,000 in insurance proceeds.

This is the difference between being able to rebuild and return your life to a level of normalcy or realizing a financial loss than can be nearly impossible to recover from.
