Tornados Within a Hurricane Can Cause Incredible Damage

A hurricane, with winds in excess of 75 miles per hour, can cause damage. A tornado, with much higher winds, that spawns from a hurricane can result in far more damage.
Hurricane Rita followed Hurricane Katrina by four weeks and hit western Louisiana and east Texas. Our firm was referred to several losses caused by Rita. The damage to many buildings was substantial, but the damage was most severe in the narrow bands that were affected by tornados.

Hurricanes generate tornadoes in addition to high winds. Note the incredible damage to the roof of a warehouse in the photo above. The storm ripped up a 20’x60’ section of a roof and dropped it 30 feet away on another section of the roof. Every wall in the cinderblock building was cracked by this action. Imagine the energy required to create this damage.
Note the almost clinical destruction here. There is little damage in the building behind the warehouse.
So be careful out there if you find yourself in a hurricane. You may think that the hurricane winds aren't that strong, but if they result in a tornado ...
